Review Your BOQ Before Work Begins in Ghana

A bill of quantities is easier to use when it becomes a shared reference for scope, quantities, materials, and payment decisions.

A bill of quantities being reviewed for a construction project

01

The BOQ is more than a long list of numbers

A bill of quantities can help translate drawings and project intentions into measurable work. Its value is not only the final total. It is the detail that lets an owner and contractor discuss what is included before the work is underway.

For a project in Ghana, a review can expose missing items, unclear descriptions, unusual units, or allowances that need confirmation. Finding those questions early is usually easier than resolving them after labour and materials have already been committed.

02

What a useful review looks for

A review should be connected to the documents and decisions that govern the project. Look for:

  • Items that appear on the drawings but not in the BOQ.
  • Quantities or units that are difficult to reconcile with the scope.
  • Material descriptions that are too broad to compare or order confidently.
  • Allowances, provisional items, and exclusions that need an owner decision.
  • Duplicate items or work that appears to be missing from a later section.

03

Turn the review into a conversation

The aim is not to make the BOQ look complicated. It is to leave a short list of agreed clarifications. Each clarification can be assigned to the person who can answer it and linked to the version of the document being discussed.

That shared record is valuable when the owner lives outside Ghana. It gives future payment and progress conversations a stable reference instead of relying on memory.

Review the BOQ while questions are still cheap to answer: before work begins and before assumptions become variations.

Turn the question into a clear request.
